Carers Trust Hillingdon are passionate about finding you the right support to help you manage your health and wellbeing, focusing on your own needs and inspirations. 

We listen to your interests and what you would like to learn or do. We then develop a programme of activities in venues around the Borough.

Here is a flavour for the activities we organise. Some are weekly for a period of time whilst others are one-offs, but they all give you the chance to meet other carers and share experiences.  

Arts for Carers :

What to do with those supermarket flowersTuesday 2 March 1-3pm
We will look at  what to look for when choosing your flowers and how to condition them once you get them home to maximise their vase life. You will learn how to arrange them like a pro which will include choosing the vase, adding extras from the garden and getting creative with other containers found round the house.

Get set for Spring – Monday 15 to 29 March 12.30-2.30pm
Join us for a fun and instructive 3 week online course, getting ready for the new growing season. This course will give you some of the gardening knowledge and skills to get you off to a good start in the garden this year. It will give you the confidence to try something new and discover your ‘green fingers’

Get your garden ready for Summer – Monday 10 – 24 May 2.30-4.30pm
This next course gets your garden ready for the summer season. Once again you gain some knowledge and skills to get the most out of your garden during the longer, warmer days of summer. It will help you understand what plants needs to grow successfully as well as give them what they need to survive during long dry spells.

Drawing and Painting for Relaxation – Monday 19 April to 17 May (excl 3 May)
Four weeks of painting and drawing with the final session being the Mandala practice, a quiet and therapeutic art form adopted by Hindus as a spiritual tool. Mandalas are used for meditation purposes and to promote healing and other positive states of mind.

 

Activities 4 You, St Johns Northwood :
St Johns are bringing smiles to faces with inviting carers to join in with “Laughter Yoga” sessions they organise. The sessions are for 20 minutes combining breath work, stretches and laughter followed by relaxation. Sessions are held over zoom on Wednesday mornings at 11am.

An exciting new group is forming at St. Johns to encourage and develop all writers, especially those who are new to writing and interested in writing their own journal. Sessions provide the support and incentive to get creativity flowing enabling everyone to share in the enjoyment of writing. The session are held over zoom 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Ideas in the pipeline:

Jazz up a T shirt with Sashiko stitching 2 weeks
Make a beautiful pattern on the front of an old T shirt using sashiko stitching, a form of Japanese embroidery

Summer dessert – make and decorate a chocolate fudge cake – 2 consecutive mornings
Learn how to make a lovely chocolate sponge and then make a ganache icing the following day. You can then freeze and take to a (hopefully) Summer BBQ

Botanical painting – using Watercolour paints or pencils We will spend 4 weeks exploring Botanical Illustration, drawing objectively from flowers and looking at ways of accurately depicting them on paper.

Therapeutic Care for Carers daytime and evening practices of methods for relaxation

Take a Breath! – Thursday 4 March 3-4pm
An hour long session of relaxation using simple Tai Chi and Breathwork creating some space in your day to rest and re-energise. Held over Zoom:  Facilitator Chris West from our Partner organisation Harlington Hospice

And So To Bed – Tuesday 18 May 8-9pm
A 45 minute relaxation session using a selection of sample of soothing skin products to apply with a live demonstration. The pamper session aims to help promote rest, relaxation and hopefully a good night’s sleep. Held over Zoom. Facilitator Leigh from Temple Spa.

Learning for Carers :

Low Mood, Stress and Anxiety – Wednesday 10 March 1:30 – 3:30pm
We will look at ways to manage your mood, stress levels and worries. We provide a supportive atmosphere where you can meet people experiencing similar difficulties and build up a toolkit of practical strategies

Preparing to care towards the End of Life – Wednesday 5 and/or 12 May  – 10am-12.30pm
You might be caring for someone who has a terminal diagnosis or naturally nearing the end of their life and want to know what the future might hold and how to deal with it..

We offer 2 Workshops covering the different stages to help you, by providing the practical information and skills you may seek, exploring coping strategies, learning about grief and accessing professional support to managing the situation you find yourself in.

Understanding palliative care – Wednesday 28 April 10-12.30
If the person you care for has a terminal diagnosis, this session will help you better understand what this means for you and your family and offer practical and emotional support. We will also discuss Advanced Care plans.

 IT Bites – 2 hour sessions, you can join just 1 or all 3 –  Dates tbc
Get the best out of your Smartphone – you can do so much more than make a call! For example you will learn how to download apps, create Whatsapp groups, check you emails or track the distance you walk.

How to shop online – we will show you how to search for your favourite shop, choose items and then pay at the checkout all in a safe and secure environment

Learn to Zoom – all you need is an email! We show you how to access zoom, learn the courtesies of using it and set up your own meetings. You will then be able to chat to your friends and family AND join our Workshops (NB this is a 2 week workshop)

Changing Relationships – Thursday  20 May  10:30am – 12:30pm 
Are you struggling to communicate with the person you care for, or other family members?  We will look at the shift in relationships as the caring role changes, and discuss the adjustments you’re undertaking. We can provide a safe space to explore these strains and struggles and think about how best to manage them.

Guide to making and decorating Cup Cakes
Try making a simple cup cake and then learn how to make butter icing in a few easy steps. We will then show you how to decorate the cake with utensils from your kitchen or use a piping bag and for the more ambitious show you how to make a beautiful flower to go on top!

We still have packs for you to learn how to draw a lily, a parrot or even a german shepherd

Looking after your Back
Help the person you care for maintain mobility whilst reducing the risk of injury to yourself. We will look at how you can help them overcome the barriers to mobility as well as helping you look after yourself when moving and handling.

First Aid
Learn the basics to help you and your family around the home.  This session will cover basic life support and using a defibrillator, dealing with head injuries and burns as well as helping you decide when you need to go to the GP or A&E

Get to know your computer better
Suitable for beginners or those who lack confidence, we will show you how to set up an email account and passwords and show you how to send, store, unsubscribe and delete them. We will also look at creating and saving Word documents.

Crochet for Beginners
Learn to crochet in a matter of hours

Cooking for Men
Has your wife or partner always done the cooking but now you need to make dinner? Do you buy too many ready-made meals? Learn how to cook simple nutritious food that wont take a long time to make nor cost the earth

Clay modelling
Ever wanted to be creative with clay? We will show you how to make and paint models without needing a wheel or a kiln. Very therapeutic.
